You are one of the lucky few who have found this hidden island surrounded by mountains. Allow me to tell you a little about this hidden part of the world.
Long ago, a powerful ruler was tired of the many squabbles of neighboring kingdoms. He watched friends and loved ones hurt and killed in the battles between them. The horrors that he witnessed would drive many men insane. He began to think that those who died were some of the lucky ones. He started searching for a way to take his little kingdom and hide it away from the rest of the world.
He sought counsel from the elves, dwarfs, fairies, and the dragons. In his quest for guidance, a great golden dragon named Asog, Protector of the Sky, offered the ruler a deal. He would open a pocket in a rift to hide the kingdom, but in return, the ruler had to swear to give his first born to the dragon.
In desperation and believing that he would never marry or have a child, he made the deal with the expectation that he would never have to pay. The dragon told him to gather his friends together and in seven days they would find themselves alone in their own domain.
The ruler gathered men and women of the realm as well as offered room for the elves, dwarfs and fairies to join him. Most thought the ruler had gone insane, but others welcomed a chance for a new start. Among them was the beautiful Elven maiden, Yathanae Brymoira, a sorceress and princess of the Elven kingdom.
When the seventh day came, the world around them rocked and shuddered. After things settled, they found themselves on a misty island surrounded by mountains. The king named the mountains Dragons Reach, proclaiming that the mountains would always be a reminder of the gift of Asog, as though he had wrapped his wings around the people.
The people began to build a great castle to tower over a village for the people, as the elves and the dwarves carved a place for themselves. The fairies found a beautiful forest to call home. As all this filled the lives of the people on this misty island, Yathanae and the ruler had grown very close. During a time of wine and passion, Yathanae became with child.
When the child was born, Asog returned demanding his price, but the ruler and Yathanae refused. Though just born, they loved their child and could not part with it. Asog was angered and the island began to sink, great waves rising up to destroy what had been built. The ruler knew he had made a deal and had to pay a price, so he stepped forward calling out to Asog.
“Asog, oh great dragon! I cannot give up the child... a child I thought I would never have.” He looked to his beloved child in the arms of the lovely Yathanae. “However, I did make a deal with you... a life. I cannot give that which I would not sacrifice myself, so I beg of you to take my life that my child and the people of the island may live on.”
The dragon thought on this for a time as everyone waited for his answer. Yathanae cried and begged the ruler to not do this, that there must be another way. Finally Asog roared and said, “You have not met my demands for the price I had set forth. However, I am not a heartless dragon. Yet, I can not be made to look like a fool either. So, this I will do, your life will be taken, and your name forgotten. This land you know so well to be secure will weaken over time and cracks into other worlds will open. You will be hidden as promised, but you will need to learn to defend yourselves and deal with threats. It will remain veiled from the world, but people will come in time if they happen to pass through the veil."
Asog wrapped his claws around the ruler and flew up to the sky on great wings. With a bellowing roar, thunder and fire filled the sky and rocked the lands. Yathanae fell to her knees in tears clutching the child, as it was true... she could no longer recall the name of the father of her child.
